BAY.A were not responsible for the graphic design of this site at all. This was handled by a separate agency.
Puppies UK is a popular puppy listings website where breeders post an advert for their puppies, and users may enquire as to the availability of these puppies.
Puppies UK’s existing site was outdated, and built upon an “out of the box” theme for listings. This was initially sufficient, but as Puppies UK grew, the theme was soon found to fall short and was not customisable to any extent.
After being provided with the graphic mockup (please see the note at the top of this case study), we were tasked with creating a lean, heavily extendible WordPress solution that was future-proofed and responsive.
The site is fully responsive, and visitors can view listings, enquire and interact with breeders from their desktop, laptop, iPad or mobile phone.
The entire members’ area is also responsive – so breeders are able to view/edit/create/delete their puppy listings from wherever they fancy!
This was a feat of BAY.A WordPress engineering!
Using Custom Post Types, we created a listings system for Puppies UK that is solid and powerful.
Puppy breeds were created as a custom taxonomy for the “listing” custom post type, and with some trickery, we brought them into a checkbox in the post editor, so that breeds could be assigned to listings without users being able to edit the breeds in that location – something key for permissions, as Puppies UK has a number of access levels for user accounts.
Display of the puppy listings by breed was handled via a simple taxonomy query, and cross-breeds were placed into a special sidebar box, so as to be distinct from the main breed being browsed – a request of the client.
Puppies UK also requested an instantly-populating gallery, which we coded through the WP Ajax action, so that visitors viewing the gallery don’t have to refresh the page when changing breed.
Finally, we customised WordPress’ email notification system to send out branded, bespoke emails to both viewers, breeders and staff alike – so that all communications from the site are in-keeping with the established brand.
